Research vs drafting
Perplexity is built around answered-with-citations workflows (web search plus an answer that points at URLs). Better default when you are still collecting sources.
ChatGPT is stronger for rewriting, outlining, and explaining once you already have readings. It will invent plausible citations if you ask for a bibliography without checks.
A sane workflow
1) Explore the topic in Perplexity or a library database. 2) Save real PDFs and links. 3) Optional: load them into NotebookLM. 4) Draft with ChatGPT or Claude. 5) Verify every citation against the original.
For academic papers, also use Semantic Scholar and Ai2 Asta.
Citations
If a tool will not show a clickable source, treat the claim as unverified.
Disclose AI use when your course or workplace requires it.
